  • ⚠️ Once opted, CANNOT switch back to NPS
  • Required Service Years: 25 years for full benefits

  • Employer Contribution: 18.5% of Basic + DA (Increased from 14%)

  • Assured Pension: 50% of average basic pay of last 12 months
  • Switch Facility: One-time one-way switch to NPS allowed 1 year before retirement or 3 months before VRS
Formula for UPS Pension:
  • If contribution years ≥ 25:
Base Pension = 50% of Avg Basic Salary
    Final Pension = Base Pension × min(Personal Corpus / Benchmark Corpus, 1) + DA
(Corpus ratio only reduces pension if there's a shortfall, doesn't increase it)
  • If 10 ≤ contribution years < 25:
    Base Pension = 50% × Avg Basic × (Years / 25)
    Final Pension = max(Base Pension × Corpus Ratio, ₹10,000) + DA
  • If contribution years < 10:
    Minimum Pension = ₹10,000 (guaranteed)

2. GPS (Maharashtra - Guaranteed Pension Scheme) UPDATED 2024

🔴 Important Note:

Maharashtra implemented UPS framework on August 25, 2024. GPS now follows UPS rules for 8.27 lakh state employees.

  • Required Service Years: 20 years for full benefits
  • Minimum Guaranteed Pension: ₹7,500
  • Employer Contribution: 18.5% (aligned with UPS)
  • Implementation: March 1, 2024
  • Gratuity: ✅ Available (follows UPS framework)
  • Lumpsum Withdrawal: ✅ Available (follows UPS framework - up to 60% of self corpus)
Formula for GPS Pension:
  • If contribution years ≥ 20:
Base Pension = 50% of Avg Basic Salary
    Final Pension = Base Pension × min(Personal Corpus / Benchmark Corpus, 1) + DA
(Corpus ratio only reduces pension if there's a shortfall)
  • If 10 ≤ contribution years < 20:
    Base Pension = 50% × Avg Basic × (Years / 20)
    Final Pension = max(Base Pension × Corpus Ratio, ₹7,500) + DA
  • If contribution years < 10:
    Minimum Pension = ₹7,500 (guaranteed)

3. NPS (National Pension System) MAJOR UPDATE DEC 2025

🆕 Revolutionary Changes (PFRDA Amendment Regulations 2025):
A. Withdrawal Rules (Effective Dec 2025)
For Non-Government Subscribers:
  • 80% lump sum withdrawal allowed (up from 60%)
  • 20% annuity required (down from 40%)
  • 60% tax-free + 20% taxable as per slab
  • 100% withdrawal if corpus ≤ ₹8 lakh
For Government Subscribers:
  • 60% lump sum (unchanged)
  • 40% annuity (unchanged)
  • 60% tax-free
  • 100% withdrawal if corpus ≤ ₹5 lakh (NPS) or ₹2.5 lakh (Tier-I)
B. New Features & Benefits
  • Maximum Stay Age: Extended to 85 years (from 75)
  • Partial Withdrawals: Up to 4 times before age 60 (from 3)
  • After Age 60: Unlimited withdrawals with 3-year gap
  • Loan Against NPS: Up to 25% of own contribution
  • 100% Equity Option: Available from October 1, 2025
  • Systematic Withdrawal: SLW and SUR options available
C. Expanded Withdrawal Reasons
  • Settlement of loans against NPS
  • Home improvement (new)
  • Skill development / Higher education
  • Startup funding (new)
  • Medical treatment (expanded to include dependent parents)
  • Purchase/construction of residential house
  • Marriage of children

4. Benchmark Corpus Calculation

Formula: Benchmark Corpus = Avg Monthly Contribution × Total Service Years × 12

How Benchmark Corpus Works:
  • If Personal Corpus ≥ Benchmark Corpus: You get FULL pension (50% of average basic)
  • If Personal Corpus < Benchmark Corpus: Pension is reduced proportionally
  • Example: If your corpus is 80% of benchmark, you get 80% of the calculated pension
  • Purpose: Protects government from shortfalls in contributions or poor investment returns

⚠️ This safeguard ensures pension sustainability. Excess corpus doesn't increase pension beyond 50% of basic.

5. Gratuity Calculation under NPS

Retirement Gratuity:

  • 1/4th of last drawn emoluments (Basic + DA) for each completed 6-month period
  • Maximum: 16.5 times emoluments, capped at ₹10 lakhs

Death Gratuity:

  • Paid to family if death occurs during service
  • Amount depends on qualifying service length
  • Maximum: ₹10 lakh

6. Important Points & Tips

  1. 🔴 CRITICAL - For DCPS Switchers:
    • If you joined service BEFORE NPS/UPS/GPS adoption, enter your DCPS corpus at time of switching in Field 2
    • Field 7 should ONLY have years under UPS/GPS (not total service years)
    • Field 1 should have TOTAL service years (for benchmark calculation)
    • Example: Joined 2006, switched to UPS in 2024, retiring 2036:
      • Field 1: 30 years (total service)
      • Field 2: Your DCPS corpus in 2024 (e.g., ₹24,00,000)
      • Field 7: 12 years (2024-2036 under UPS)
    • Your DCPS corpus WILL BE ADDED to new contributions, so pension won't be unfairly reduced!
  2. DCPS Transfer Delay: If DCPS amount transferred late by 2-3 years, subtract those years from contribution years
  3. Current Corpus Input: If entering current NPS corpus (Field 2), input remaining service years in Field 3
  4. Initial Corpus Input: If entering initial NPS corpus at joining, input total years till retirement in Field 3
  5. UPS/GPS Pension Basis: Based on average salary of last 12 months before retirement
  6. Benchmark Corpus Impact: If employee corpus < benchmark corpus, pension reduces proportionally (applies to UPS and GPS)
  7. UPS Gratuity: Confirmed available under UPS scheme
  8. NPS Tax Alert: While 80% withdrawal allowed (non-govt), only 60% is tax-free; remaining 20% is taxable
  9. UPS Decision: Once opted for UPS, cannot switch back to NPS
  10. Subscriber Type: Government vs Non-Government subscribers have different NPS withdrawal rules
